The Pileated Woodpecker pecks a rhythm into a peeling birch tree as he searches for his next meal.

He pauses and lets out a burst of laughter and then continues his work as the wood chips fly and form piles around the base of the tree.

His call or laugh is spaced in between the drumming and adds a welcome and comical respite from his persistent tapping.

The red crown on his head signifies his fiery importance in the forest hierarchy and his spiritual message to us is one of perseverance and diligence, as well as a reminder to apply humor to our struggles to help ease our path.

His steady drumming teaches us to walk to the beat of our own drum, and to follow the rhythm of our own life, and to cast off the rhythms put upon you by others.

The unique laugh suggests that we keep things light and enjoy and savor every minute, no matter how hard the task in front of us is.
